Ladies of Charity

MISSION: To serve Jesus Christ in the person of the poor, the disadvantaged, the sick and the infirmed in the compassionate spirit of the gospel through the practice of spiritual and corporal works of mercy MOTTO: “To Serve Rather Than Be Served” in Humility, Simplicity and Charity HISTORY: The Ladies of Charity at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church (OLPH) was established in 1962. Today, we have more than 70 active and associate members. All Catholic men and women who are resolved to being faithful to the values and works of our founders St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac are eligible for membership in the OLPH Ladies of Charity. The active membership is open to Catholic women age 18 and older. The associates consist of members unable to perform active duties, but promote the good works of the association through prayer, witness and financial support. Although physically active, all men are considered associate members. All associate members are exempt from the payment of annual dues. Further, our association has been blessed with six (6) past-presidents who are still actively participating in our mission to serve the poor. Since the inception of the OLPH Ladies of Charity in 1962, we have had only eight presidents. These ladies not only preserve institutional memory, but serve as role models to the membership with their continued commitment and involvement. Our members support the Archdiocese of Washington Ladies of Charity by attending the Annual General Assembly held each year in October at the Carroll Manor Nursing Home on the grounds of Providence Hospital; Annual Communion Brunch held every March in honor of St. Louise De Marillac and, participate in the May Day fundraiser held at St. Ann’s Infant and Maternity Home. Also, OLPH Ladies of Charity sponsors a representative to attend the Annual National Assembly convention with the Ladies of Charity of the United States of America (LCUSA) held in September each year. OLPH Ladies of Charity had the distinct honor of receiving one of the first LCUSA Kathleen Hager Fund Grant Awards for the many hands-on projects within our association. In 2008, the Stewardship Committee of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church recognized the OLPH Ladies of Charity for its dedicated service to the community with a “Journey Award.” In addition, we have had several members who received individual awards from the Archdiocese of Washington for Distinguished Service and from the parish.
